Etymology: This root, which is well represented in Greek, has a verbal stem καμπ- without ablaut, with the primary verbal noun καμπ-ή (with καμπ-ύλος?) and κάμπ-τω with κάμψαι etc., and has in the other languages scattered nominal representatives, partly in metaph. meanings and therefore not always certain: Latv. kampis `curved wood, hook for a kettle', Lith. kam̃pas `corner, side, hidden place', also `curved wood at the collar (of a horse)', with which agree both Lat. campus `field' (prop. `(bow) Biegung, (lower field) Niederung'?) and a German. adj. `mutilated, lame', e. g. Goth. hamfs. "Beside it stands with final -b (cf. on σκαμβός) a Celtic adjective `curved', OIr. camm etc. (\< * cambo-; to which Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforschung 3, 231 connects the brook- and place-name Kobenz \< * Kambantia); cf. further Campona GN in Pannonia). - Further there are in Baltic several words for `curved etc.' with u-vowel, Lith. kum̃pas `curved', Latv. kùmpt `become bent, verschrumpfen' a. o., which may have a reduced vowel-grade, but at the same time have a popular character and therefore can only be added here with reserve." Kretschmer Glotta 16, 179) a noun *γάμμα, *κάμμα. - I have maintained here Frisk's discussion, as it shows clearly how unreliable the material is; it is rather from a substratum language. To this comes that IE would require a form * kh₂mp-, a type that is quite rare. The conclusion can only be that καμπ- is of Pre-Greek origin. - Cf. on γαμψός and γνάμτω, for which I also arrived at this conclusion.

The possibility of repenting ἔχει τέλος is at an end Hv 2, 2, 5. Of the consummation that comes to prophecies when they are fulfilled (Xenophon Eph. 5, 1, 13; Jos., Ant. 2, 73; 4, 125; 10, 35; SibOr 3, 211): revelations Hv 3, 3, 2. So perh. τὸ περὶ ἐμοῦ τέλος ἔχει the references (in the Scriptures) to me are being fulfilled Lk 22:37; also prob. is my life’s work is at an end (cp. Diod S 20, 95, 1 τέλος ἔχειν of siege-machines, the construction of which entailed a great deal of hard work: be completed; Plut., Mor. 615e; Jos., Vi. 154).

Apoll. 6, 29; Nicetas Eugen. 7, 165 χειρὶ βαρβάρων) has a tendency to speak of a person’s activity as the work of one’s hand; διὰ χειρός ([τῶν] χειρῶν) τινος (בְּיַד פּ׳) through or by someone or someone’s activity, at the hand of Mk 6:2; Ac 2:23; 5:12; 7:25; 11:30; 14:3; 15:23; 19:11. Also ἐν χειρί (PsSol 16:14 ἐν χειρὶ σαπρίας by corruption; cp. AscIs 2:5 ἐν χερσίν) Gal 3:19. Corresp. the hands can represent the one who is acting οὐδὲ ὐπὸ χειρῶν ἀνθρωπίνων θεραπεύεται nor does God need to be served by humans Ac 17:25.

Etymology: A basis *βυθι̯ός or *βυθσός for βυσσός does not inspire confidence. Connecting βαθύς (and βῆσσα) one posited a labio-velar, but then the connection of βαθύς with βενθος must be abandoned, for which there is no reason. Also assuming a labio-velar would mean that the β- could not be regular (one expects γυ-): it would have to be introduced from βῆσσα, which a guess. Connecting γυθίσσων διορύσσων H. would give the same problem; the form can better be left aside. - The old attempts to connect βαθύς and βῆσσα (with α against υ) are most improbable and should now be abandoned. βυθός - βυσσός shows a typical variation of Pre-Greek words; see Fur.248-263, e.g. ἄνηθον\/ ἄνησον. Σιλουανός, οῦ, ὁ (Diod S 11, 27, 1, a Σ. as contemporary with the battle of Salamis [480 B.C.]; OGI 533, 50 [time of Augustus] and later ins and pap; Jos., Ant. 20:14; in rabbinic lit. סִילְוָנִי CIJ I, 596) Silvanus; surely the same man who appears in Ac as Σίλας (q.v.). Either he had two names (like Paul), one Semit. and one Lat. (Zahn), or Σιλουανός is the Lat. form of the same name that is Grecized in Σίλας (B-D-F §125, 2; Mlt-H. 109f; 146). 2 Cor 1:19 (v.l. Σιλβανός, which is also found Diod S 11, 41, 1); 1 Th 1:1; 2 Th 1:1 (s. also the subscr. of 2 Th); 1 Pt 5:12 (this pass. has given rise to the conclusion that Silvanus was somehow or other [as translator? in Sb 8246, 38 Germanus speaks before the court διʼ ʼ Ανουβίωνος ἑρμηνεύοντος] connected w. the writing of 1 Pt; e.g., Zahn [Einleitung II³ 10f], GWohlenberg [NKZ 24, 1913, 742–62], WBornemann [Der erste Petrusbrief—eine Taufrede des Silvanus?: ZNW 19, 1920, 143ff], Harnack [Mission I⁴ 1923, 85], LRadermacher [Der 1 Pt u. Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]

Etymology: As the orig. meaning of this old word is uncertain, the etymology is also uncertain. If prop. `flat cake, flat dough', for which esp. πέλανος as coin-name seems to argue (Solmsen KZ 42, 213), then the old connection (since Fick 1, 477) with Lat. plānus `flat, level' = Lith. plónas `thin', plóne `flan, cake' would be correct. On the ablaut cf. πέλαγος. -- Other proposals: to Skt. párīṇas- n. `sullness, riches' (: πίμπλημι [but this would have given *πελενος; not to πολύς]; Specht KZ 61, 284ff. with agreement of Kretschmer Glotta 26, 67, Fraenkel Mél. Bq 1, 358 n. 1, Havers Sprachtabu 135; rejecting W.-Hofmann s. pulpa); to Lith. pilù, pìlti `shake, pour' (Persson Beitr. 2, 748 n. 1); to πόλτος (Lidén Stud. 87f. with Lagercrantz); to Lith. pel̃nas `merit, pay' (Mann Lang. 28, 31; to be rejected). -- Further details in Bq and WP. 2, 61, Pok. 805 f., W.-Hofmann s. plānus, Mayrhofer s. páriman-. -- Furnée 338 compares πέλαινα and concludes to a Pre-Greek word. The argument seems not certain, but the conclusion may well be correct.

Etymology: Unclar σωρότερος, as `big cup' explained (Greek-Copt. glossary, s. Aegyptus 6,215). No agreement outside Greek. Within Greek one compares σῶμα (like γνῶ-μα: γνώ-ρ-ιμος, κλῆ-μα: κλῆ-ρος etc.). Starting fom idg. *tu̯ō-ro-s, Solmsen IF 26, 2 13 ff. (where also against connection with σορός) seeks connection with σῶς, σάος, further also with ταΰς, τύλη (s. vv.) etc. (IE * tēu- `swell'; WP. 1, 706ff., Pok. 1080ff.).

Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]

Etymology: Cf. μυκός. I see no connection between the two. The first connection seems with μυνδός, which points to a Pre-Greek word (with prenasalisation). Connection with Arm. mownǰ `dumb' seems obvious, but the conclusion is not clear (Clackson, Relationship 45: *mundi̯o- `somewhat dubious'; it could well be a substratum word). Pok. 751 does not help.
